Switzerland has a lot of traditional Christmas markets and typical winter food. In the capital Bern, you will find a unique Christmas Market in Waisenhausplatz. This market, which runs from December 2 to 24, has a traditional 20-year history. Waisenhausplatz is known for displaying 50 wooden houses, each decorated to match the decorations and utensils sold inside. After Christmas, it turns into Altjahresmarkt on December 27th. Another festival in Bern is the Münsterplatz Christmas Market, which brings together many artists and artists who promote their crafts in front of the church.

Speaking of delicious food, the Swiss really know how to warm visitors with their traditional dishes. To start your Swiss culinary adventure you will enjoy the  famous Swiss fondue . What could be more attractive than dipping freshly baked bread in a pot of melted cheese? Picture of you sitting in the Swiss Alps with snow all around and eating the best cheese you've ever tasted.

And the great fun doesn't stop there! The Swiss also enjoy Rac Muff - large cheeses that are melted using a special tool and then swept onto pieces of other food (eg potatoes or meat) on your plate!

Of course, the Swiss are also famous for their unique delicious chocolate. In fact, Switzerland is the world's most prolific chocolate-eating country, eating an average of 8 kg per person per year! In 1819, Cailler's chocolate factory was founded and today, it is called Nestlé. The Lindt firm was founded in 1879 and is one of the reasons Swiss chocolate is so popular.

When you visit Switzerland, try a chocolate treat with Glühwein. This drink dates back to the 2nd century and it has achieved a very delicious taste until now. Glühwein is usually prepared from red wine, heated with spices with cinnamon, cloves, star anise, citrus, sugar and vanilla. The flavors that go well with chocolate!

Switzerland - a country with unique traditions

The Swiss consider winter a time of celebration and festival of the year. While agriculture is predominantly in the summer, villagers are busy planting trees until the first snow falls they will stop the work and start a long festival. Each area in Switzerland celebrates winter in their own way including masked festivals to ward off evil spirits.

Smaller villages will count down to Christmas with the 'adventure window'. The beautifully decorated window remains covered until they reveal it on the designated date. When the window is revealed, it will light up until Christmas. So from December 1 to 24, everyone gathered at the window during the day to watch the premiere. They share biscuits and hot chocolate with their neighbors. This shared culture continues across Switzerland so far, households will distribute their beautifully decorated cookies.

During winter in Switzerland , the tradition will be slightly different from the rest of the world. Santa Claus arrives on December 6th. Instead of gifts, Santa brings a bag full of chocolates, peanuts and tangerines!
